SUMMARY:John Wood: The System is Alive
DESCRIPTION:John Wood: The System is Alive \nOct 13\, 2023 – Apr 28\, 2024\nJohn C. Wood (1922-2012) was an educator and artist whose practice transcended divisions of media. Wood taught with distinction at Alfred University from 1954 to 1987 where he developed the photo\, graphic design\, book arts\, printmaking\, and foundation programs in the School of Art & Design. Wood was a revered and influential professor who described his aesthetic practice as “being in the state of drawing” and grounded in his personalized forms of “System Drawing.” These philosophies\, prominent throughout this exhibition\, are the connective tissue for his life’s work. \nThe exhibition focuses on the relationship between Wood’s visual scholarship and its expression through diverse media\, extending through more than 25 different forms and variants. Among the media are drawings on various substrates\, including a range of papers\, rocks\, and sand\, and an equivalent variety of print media\, including intaglio\, etching\, lithographs\, woodcuts\, silkscreen\, and photography. The photographic works are themselves in a range of formats\, from cyanotypes to multi-media collages. Many of the works seen here have never been exhibited before. In his work\, Wood did not offer answers to questions\, instead presenting pathways for consideration. His work took on a range of subjects\, but ultimately\, they were platforms for conversation on topics of environmental\, political\, and social concerns. \nNearly all Wood’s notes\, writings on art\, and preparatory works have been held and archived by members of his family. This record of achievement and discovery stretching from 1948 into the new millennium has not previously been studied.  John Wood: The System is Alive represents an in-depth examination of close to 400 of Wood’s notebooks\, sketchbooks\, one-of-a-kind experimental artist’s books\, and unframed preliminary drawings bringing forth a profound reinterpretation and radically new appreciation of the depth and breadth of an artist generally remembered as master photographer and educator. \nWood’s artwork is in collections nationally. These include Baltimore Museum of Art\, Center for Creative Photography\, George Eastman House\, J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles County Museum\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The National Gallery of Canada\, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery\, and many others. This exhibition\, curated by Joseph Scheer and organized with help from the supportive team at the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University is presented with support from the Tower Family Fund\, and the Wendt Foundation\, Thanks to Carol Wood and family for all of their great work and Anthony Bannon\, PhD for his review and advice on the broad spectrum of the artist’s career.

SUMMARY:Doug An Inter-Media Enjambment
DESCRIPTION:Doug\nAn Inter-Media Enjambment \nNov 10\, 2023 – Apr 28\, 2024\nDoug is a Video and Sound Installation by Bufffluxus\, an ensemble composed of musicians\, vocalists and artists focused on exploring and developing the ideas and long and short forms proposed by the New Music\, Fluxus and Dada art movements. Doug can best be described as an Inter-Media Enjambment (in literature a continuation of a sentence or idea without interruption) that was created using various methods of Indeterminacy (the act of relying on elements of chance and interpretation where aspects of the work are left open to the interpreter’s free choice.) \nThe story of Doug is a nostalgic fantasy concerning a pet rodent that was purchased by well-meaning parents to teach their children how to be responsible and care for others. As often happens\, there is a break in communication and Doug’s cage is left open. Being of the age where curiosity makes one less aware of their environment\, Doug wanders in search of comfort in matters of the heart. He quickly learns his pursuits are best served by relying on indeterminacy and an enjambment of ideas and disciplines. His attraction to chance\, abstraction and aspirational thought lead to a variety of emotional adventures that can be thought of as both provocative and ridiculous at the same time. Doug finds himself in a world of inter-media where indeterminacy and predetermined destination has led him to a nostalgic fantasy where he discovers aliens living in Target stores. Surviving on milkshakes and treacherous plants Doug lives in a world of thought whose story of abstraction are indiscernible to the audience. \nText for Doug is by Michael Basinski\, with video and animations by Andrew Deutsch and music by Don Metz. Collaborators created work independently which was jammed together during an editing process. Performers include violinist David Adamczyk\, guitarist Sonny Baker\, vocalist Michael Basinski \, bassist David Benders\, guitarist Don Metz\, percussionist John Smigielski and vocalists Kristen Smigielski and Kevin Thurston.

SUMMARY:Boney James
DESCRIPTION:Boney James\nKLEINHANS MUSIC HALL and SOUL OF BUFFALO present:\nBONEY JAMES\nSmooth Jazz/R&B Sax Master\nSUNDAY MARCH 17\, 2024 | 7pm\nDoors at 5:30pm\nDetour\, on Concord Records\, is chart-topping jazz/R&B sax player Boney James’ 18th studio album. Appropriately titled\, this latest album is a subtle stylistic turn that builds on the commercial success of 2020’s Solid\, his highest charting release ever on the pop charts\, peaking in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. \n“The urge to write again came from the joy of being back on the road\, performing in front of live audiences\,” explains Boney. “I had shut down creatively when the pandemic hit. It was the disruptive and disorienting detour we all took when the world locked down\, and that’s reflected in the more experimental directions some of the new music takes. The thing about a detour\, you may take a different route\, but you still get to your destination.” \nLike Solid\, Detour provides a welcome respite from an increasingly foreboding world filled with political strife. It’s a trip through James’ distinctive contemporary jazz/R&B landscapes\, layered in quicksilver watercolor images and cinematic set pieces. Detour represents the next extension of Boney James’ trademark blend of genres which includes blues\, soul\, roots\, classical\, art-pop and hip-hop. \n“There are some people who think I’m a legend\,” laughs Boney about his status as one of the best-kept secrets in music. “And others who have never heard of me. It’s kind of a nice place to live and play in. I do sense a great deal of positive energy towards the music I’ve been making recently and for that\, I’m tremendously grateful.” \n“Coastin’” featuring Lalah Hathaway\, a breezy ride through Malibu on the Pacific Coast Highway\, will be the first single at Urban Adult Contemporary radio. “I am so thrilled to finally have the opportunity to collaborate with Lalah\,” says Boney. “I am a huge fan and it was a complete joy to co-write this song and have her come over and sing this amazing performance.” \nJames’ new album gets underway with the title track\, a winding\, playful duet between sax and piano evoking a breezy\, leisurely drive on an open road\, that features some of Boney’s most adventurous playing. “I close my eyes and listen\,” he says about choosing a name for a particular cut\, and “Detour” fits this one perfectly. “The title is my trying to poetically convey what I feel when I listen to the music.” \nThere are also “detours” along the way for a steamy\, sweaty summer day in a bluesy “Memphis\,” a shimmering glimpse of the aurora borealis via Boney’s chill-inducing soprano sax solo (“Northern Lights”) and even the fleeting present moment in the heartbeat which opens the closing “Blur\,” a wistful lullaby that still manages to point us to the future. \n“Bring It Back\,” the first Contemporary Jazz radio focus track\, features a patented warm Boney melody\, highlighted by a spirited funky point-counterpoint between James’ rhythmic tenor sax and buzzing West Coast new jazz musician Dontae Winslow’s punchy trumpet licks. “That interplay is one of my favorite moments on the album\,” says Boney. \n“Tribute” is a eulogy to Boney’s father\, an entertainment attorney who represented him for most of his life\, who died last October. It’s a rhythmically complex neo-classical meditation\, both “harmonically jazzy\,” but with a finger-snapping hip-hop pulse. “The Loop” takes a drumbeat from touring drummer Omari Williams (looped\, of course) recorded in mono directly to Boney’s iPhone and\, yes\, detours into a winding\, twangy Wes Montgomery-esque blues guitar solo that gently waxes and wanes like a rolling tidal wave. “It’s pretty wild\,” says Boney. There’s a seductive intimacy to the sax/bass duet in “Intention\,” an idea that came from production team Anakin & Vader. \nDetour was recorded largely at Boney’s L.A. home studio in his backyard (live drums and percussion were tracked at venerable Sunset Sound)\, with both regular collaborators like former band guitarist\, now an in-demand writer/producer\, Jairus “J-Mo” Mozee (Anderson.Paak\, Nicki Minaj\, Anthony Hamilton) and hot newcomer BeatsMadeByFresh aka Christian Frazier. Among the other musicians on the album are keyboardist Tim Carmon (Eric Clapton)\, longtime drummer Omari Williams and bassist Alex Al\, renowned percussionist Lenny Castro\, and guitarists Big Mike Hart and Paul Jackson Jr. \nNicknamed by bandmates while on tour in Oslo\, Norway\, after jokingly threatening to starve himself on a threadbare per diem\, Boney or Bones or Boneman (though his wife calls him Jimmy) has put in his proverbial 10\,000 hours as a musician\, performer\, writer and producer. At age 10\, the New Rochelle\, NY native picked up the sax after 2 years on the clarinet and never looked back\, parlaying his love of R&B –Motown\, Stevie Wonder\, Earth Wind & Fire\, Curtis Mayfield and Grover Washington\, Jr. — into a musical aesthetic. He turned pro before his 20th birthday and became an in-demand touring sax and keyboard player for Morris Day\, the Isley Brothers\, Teena Marie\, Bobby Caldwell\, Randy Crawford and many others. \nIncreasingly frustrated by playing other people’s music\, Boney launched his own solo career with 1992’s Trust on the indie Spindletop Records. His subsequent 17 studio albums – including a pair of Christmas records – have been released by Warner Bros.\, Verve and Concord\, with 1995’s Seduction\, 1997’s Sweet Thing and 1999’s Body Language all RIAA certified gold. In 2015\, Boney’s futuresoul spent 11 weeks atop the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and was the best-selling Contemporary Jazz Record of 2015. \nDuring his 30-year career\, Boney has earned four Grammy nominations (“I’m not gonna lie… I’d still love a statue\,” he says)\, two NAACP Image Award nominations and a Soul Train Award\, while a dozen of his albums have landed at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart. His collaborators in the past include a who’s who of R&B and soul: Raheem DeVaughn\, Faith Evans\, George Benson\, George Duke\, Dwele\, Al Jarreau\, Philip Bailey\, Anthony Hamilton\, Jaheim\, Eric Benét\, Dave Hollister\, Stokley Williams\, Kenny Lattimore and Angie Stone. \nFor the inimitable Boney James\, life begins at 60. The cat in the hat is back and better than ever\, enjoying life with his wife of 37 years\, actress/director Lily Mariye. \n“What drives me is my love of making music and my desire for people to hear what I’ve made\,” he says. “I still love the communal aspect of playing live. There’s nothing else like it.”
