SUMMARY:Printing with Wax
DESCRIPTION:Printing with Wax\n\n\n\n\n\nEncaustic Monotype Workshop\n\n\nMay 16\, 2024 6:00pm — 8:00pm\n\n\n\nArtist/Instructor: Mark Lavatelli \nFee: $35 members/$45not-yet members \nAll supplies provided. \n  \nRegister Here\n  \nCreate one-of-a-kind vibrant prints on paper with encaustic\, a unique medium consisting of heated beeswax and pigment. Using brushes\, tools\, and Dura-Lar film\, make images on a custom hotbox and print them on Japanese papers. These quick\, unique prints are called monotypes. No previous experience necessary. Space is limited. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nMark Lavatelli is a Western New York painter\, educator\, and freelance critic. He earned a BA in art history from Cornell in 1970\, an MA in art history from the University of Illinois in 1973\, and an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of New Mexico in 1979. Lavatelli taught at a number of universities before relocating to Buffalo\, N.Y.\, for a position as professor of humanities at Medaille College 1988.  As a painter\, Lavatelli’s primary subject matter is close-up views of trees and their branches\, which he takes as representative of nature as a whole. His chosen medium is the ancient beeswax technique called encaustic. His work has won him numerous awards\, grants\, residencies\, and commissions. He has also had solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States since the 1980s. In 2006 he was featured in Trees Interpreted: Charles Burchfield and Mark Lavatelli\, the first exhibition at the Burchfield Penney Art Center to juxtapose work by its namesake painter with that of a contemporary artist. Lavatelli is married to fellow painter Polly Little and is the father of multimedia artist Anna Chiaretta Lavatelli and painter Zoe Lavatelli Leach. For more information on Mark Lavatelli\, visit http://marklavatelli.com/. \n  \nSuggested supplies for participants to bring:  \nA small simple portfolio\, about 22 X 16’\, can be made from cardboard or mat board. \n(This will help transport your artwork created in the workshop.) \nSketches and ideas of expressive shapes \n  \nFor Further information please contact Kathy Shiroki: shirokkg@buffalostate.edu
