SUMMARY:HOLLY BOWLING
DESCRIPTION:Holly Bowling returns to Buffalo Iron Works for a very special evening on Thursday November 16th\, 2023! \nHolly Bowling \nCast aside any and all expectations. \nWhether behind the piano on a windswept mountainous cliff\, at a hallowed venue such as Carnegie Hall\, or playing shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most legendary musicians in history\, solo pianist Holly Bowling subverts convention with virtuosic playing\, emotional immersion\, and a thirst for invention. Acclaimed by Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, Relix\, and more and sought-after by icons such as Phil Lesh\, Bob Weir\, and Warren Haynes\, she once again flips the script on her 2020 album and second reimagining of Grateful Dead staples entitled Seeking All That’s Still Unsung. \n“When you go to see someone play solo piano\, you’re not expecting them to stand up\, pluck the strings\, drum on the frame\, hit the strings with mallets\, or place magnets and EBows inside of the piano\,” she smiles. “It doesn’t fit with the expectations of how you’re supposed to play this instrument. I think it works though.” \nHer introduction to the instrument happened at just five-years-old when mom and dad bought a piano from a yard sale down the street. They gave their daughter a choice: ballet or piano. As the sounds of Mozart\, Beethoven\, and The Grateful Dead piped through their home\, she obviously chose the latter without hesitation. \nAfter a childhood dedicated to the instrument\, she studied piano performance at SF State University. Intermittent gigs around San Francisco followed before she ended up on stage for an impromptu jam with Marco Benevento. “I paid him a dollar to go up there\,” she recalls. “It reminded me that for most of my life I wanted to be on stage playing\, and I couldn’’t let that slip away.” \nAfter catching a 2013 Phish show in Lake Tahoe renowned for its extended rendition of “Tweezer\,” she transcribed and arranged the entire 37-minute improvisational masterpiece into a nuanced and intricate piano opus. She humbly refers to it as “a nerdy pet project that somehow inspired people to demand Phish on piano.” It announced her arrival as an exciting outlier and paved the way for Distillation Of A Dream: The Music Of Phish Reimagined For Solo Piano in 2015. \nAs her profile rose\, she delivered Better Left Unsung only a year later. For this triple-LP\, she re-arranged iconic moments from the Grateful Dead on her piano. It bowed in the Top 25 of the Billboard Top Classical Albums Chart. She went on to share the stage with everyone from The Dead’s Weir and Lesh to Haynes\, John Scofield\, Jim James\, Branford Marsalis\, Don Was\, Robert Randolph\, Greensky Bluegrass\, and more. Along the way\, she graced the bills of Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads and Haynes’s annual Christmas Jam and unveiled the concert recording Live at the Old Church. Simultaneously\, she co-founded improvisational rock outfit Ghost Light in 2018. Engaging a faithful audience even in the midst of the “new normal” of 2020\, she launched a series of living room livestreams chronicled on the eight-volume Alone Together: The Living Room Sessions highlighted by her innovative re-imaginings of Radiohead\, Nine Inch Nails\, and many others. \nDuring 2019\, she tracked Seeking All That’s Still Unsung at 25th Street Recording in Oakland over the course of just five days. \n“Seeking All That’s Still Unsung is a lyric from a Dead song\,” she explains. “There was definitely a sense of trying to look for what I hadn’t said on the last album. Having spent a few more years exploring the Dead’s music in the solo piano context\, I felt free enough to take more liberties with how I approach the arrangements and improvisation. I can insert myself into the songs more. Given their nature\, I realized the way to actually be the truest to them is to throw the rules out the window.” \nUnder the influence of the Bill Evans album Conversations with Myself\, she properly incorporated overdubs for the first time\, locking into a “dialogue” with her own playing. She tried her hand at this approach on Better Left Unsung’s “Dark Star\,” but truly brought it to life here. \nOn the opener and first single “St. Stephen\,” her fingers nimbly conjure a melody between bass-y root notes. The call-and-response instantly captivates with all of the drama and dynamics of a main stage festival performance. \n“It’s like you’re watching a movie\,” she explains. “The scene changes\, and the colors and lighting just shift. Something new comes into focus\, and the improv goes further. It’s not what I expected to come out of the arrangement initially\, but it’s a defining moment on the album. It has the intensity of the overdubbing and some light and dark places to showcase a different range of emotions. \nElsewhere\, the sprawling near 14-minute “Weather Report Suite” traverses a similar scope as her transcendent playing spirals towards a climactic release. The project culminates on a delicate “Stella Blue\,” which she calls “the perfect landing point of the album and an exhale at the end after this emotional ebb and flow.” \nIn advance of Seeking All That’s Still Unsung\, she embarked on The Wilderness Sessions—a virtual concert tour of natural wonders across the United States. Setting up her piano in the heart of national parks and landmarks such as Yosemite National Park\, the Bonneville Salt Flats\, Bruneau Canyon\, the Beartooth Mountains\, and the Badlands of South Dakota\, she catalyzed the “Interaction between the music and the landscape.” \nIn the end\, Holly consistently redefines what’s possible on her instrument of choice. \n“When I play pure stripped-down acoustic piano\, it’s like going home\,” she leaves off. “I love the nuance\, detail\, and emotion you can pull out of a piano in a more subtle and quiet setting. The moments I cherish the most happen when I slip outside of myself for a while. If my music gives this to someone else\, that would make me happy. There are shades of classical and shades from the Grateful Dead. A lot of classical enthusiasts might not give the Dead a chance. Many Deadheads may not like classical. Personally\, I’ve always had two halves of my musical life. When I finally started to bring them together\, it was something I’d been building towards for a lot longer than I’d realized. Bringing everything together\, I’d love to open up boundaries and help people discover something new.” \nBuffalo Iron Works \n49 Illinois St Buffalo\, NY 14203 \nTickets: $22 ADV/$27 DOS \nDoors: 7:00pm \nShow: 8:00pm \nAges: 18+

Among many accolades\, they’ve recently claimed a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2019\, they notably ignited the comeback of the decade with their Platinum-Certified Republic Records debut\, Happiness Begins. It yielded the history-making\, 5x-Platinum smash “Sucker\,” which minted them as “the first group in the 21st century to debut at #1 on the Hot 100\,” exploded as the “longest running #1 Pop Airplay Single of 2019\,” and received a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.” Bowing at #1 on the Billboard 200\, Happiness Begins impressively scored the “biggest sales week of 2019 at time of release” and housed the Double-Platinum “Only Human” and Platinum “Cool.” The band supported the album with the worldwide “Happiness Begins Tour”—selling over 1.2 million tickets—and the Amazon Original documentaries Chasing Happiness and Happiness Continues. Along the way\, the members simultaneously juggled prolific solo careers extending into television\, film\, and successful business ventures. In 2023\, Jonas Brothers once again proved they are a constant force\, embarking on a new era with the release of The Album\, via Republic Records. The Album was produced by Jon Bellion and features hit singles “Waffle House” and “Wings.” In support of the new album and this new era for Jonas Brothers\, they’re kicking off “The Tour” with two sold-out shows at New York’s iconic Yankee Stadium on August 12th and 13th. “The Tour” will include stadium and arena dates around the globe through 2024\, resulting in the band’s biggest and most extensive tour to date. \nAbout Lawrence \nAs NPR writes\, “siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence are not your typical pair.” Clyde Lawrence and Gracie Lawrence have been writing songs and listening to countless Stevie Wonder\, Randy Newman\, and Aretha Franklin records in their family’s New York City apartment since they were little kids. After years of playing together\, they officially created Lawrence\, an eight-piece soul-pop band comprised of musician friends from childhood and college. SUMMARY:Cherish the Ladies “A Celtic Christmas”
DESCRIPTION:Kleinhans Music Hall presents\nCherish the Ladies “A Celtic Christmas”\nDecember 1st\, 2023\, 8 PM\nThe Mary Seaton Room\, Kleinhans Music Hall \nOne of the most engaging and successful ensembles in the history of Celtic music\, Cherish The Ladies have shared timeless Irish traditions with audiences worldwide for over thirty years. In their Celtic Christmas program\, the Ladies put their signature mark on classic carols such as “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night\,” in arrangements that highlight the group’s unique Celtic instrumentation\, beautiful harmonies\, and spectacular step dancing. Hailed by The New York Times as “passionate\, tender and rambunctious\,” Cherish The Ladies have released three critically acclaimed holiday albums\, On Christmas Night\, A Star In The East\, and 2015’s Christmas In Ireland. \nAbout Cherish the Ladies\n“It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do\,” says The Boston Globe of Cherish The Ladies\, Grammy Award nominated Irish-American supergroup that formed in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Celtic music scene. Cherish The Ladies has shared timeless Irish traditions and good cheer with audiences worldwide for decades. They’ve brought their signature blend of virtuosic instrumental talents\, beautiful vocals\, and stunning step dancing to the White House\, the Olympics\, and to PBS with their television special\, An Irish Homecoming\, which received an Emmy Award. The Washington Post praises the “astonishing array of virtuosity” that Cherish The Ladies bring to the stage on a regular basis. Their latest album\, Heart of the Home\, embraces the gift of music passed down from generations. “It was the greatest gift they could give us\,” says bandleader Joanie Madden. “We’re carrying on the music of our fathers.” As their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continues to grow\, Cherish The Ladies blazes forward into another decade of music making. \nUnder the leadership of All-Ireland flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden\, named by The Irish Voice Newspaper as one of the Top 25 most influential Irish Americans of the past quarter century\, these ladies create an evening that includes a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents\, beautiful vocals\, captivating arrangements\, and stunning step dancing. Their continued success as one of the top Celtic groups in the world is due to the ensemble’s ability to take the best of Irish traditional music and dance and put it forth in an immensely entertaining show. \nThe New York Times calls their music “passionate\, tender\, and rambunctious\,” and the Washington Post praises their “astonishing array of virtuosity.” They’ve won recognition as the BBC’s Best Musical Group of the Year and named Top North American Celtic Group at the Irish Music Awards and not to mention having a street named after them in the Bronx! They’ve collaborated with such musicians as The Boston Pops\, The Clancy Brothers\, the Chieftains\, Vince Gill\, Nanci Griffith\, Pete Seeger\, Don Henley\, Arlo Guthrie and Maura O’Connell as well as being the featured soloist with over 280 nights of symphony orchestras. \nThe level of artistic\, historic\, and purely enticing entertainment is unlike any in its genre. As their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continue to grow\, Cherish The Ladies blazes forward into another decade of music-making. \nJOANIE MADDEN Born in New York of Irish parents and raised in a musical household\, her mother hails from Miltown Malbay\, County Clare and her father Joe\, an All-Ireland Champion accordion player was a native of Portumna\, County Galway. At a very early age\, Joanie was exposed to the finest Irish traditional music listening to her father and his friends play music at family gatherings and social events. She began taking lessons from legendary flutist and National Heritage Award winner Jack Coen\, and within a few short years\, she had achieved great success winning the world championship in Irish music on both the concert flute and tin whistle. During that time\, Joanie also became the first American to win the coveted Senior All- Ireland Championship on the whistle. \nMadden has sold over 500\,000 solo albums and has performed on over 200 recordings\, including three Grammy-winning albums running the gamut from Pete Seeger and Sinead O’Connor to the Boston Pops. Throughout her musical career\, she has amassed a plethora of awards and citations. Her merits include being the youngest member inducted into both the Irish-American Musicians Hall of Fame and the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Hall of Fame\, she was chosen for the Wild Geese award\, where she joined an impressive list of previous honorees\, including: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt\, Tony award winning playwright Brian Friel\, Nobel prize laureate Seamus Heaney and Irish dance sensation\, Michael Flatley. Irish America Magazine selected her twice as one of the Top 100 Irish-Americans in the United States and she was also named Traditional Musician of the Year by the Irish Voice newspaper\, all for her contributions to promoting and preserving Irish culture in the United States. In 2010\, Joanie was forever immortalized on the streets of her native Bronx when a street was named after her on the Grand Concourse: “Joanie Madden and Cherish the Ladies”. In 2011\, she was bestowed one of the nation’s highest awards as she was chosen for the Ellis Island Medal of Honor\, joining an illustrious list of distinguished American citizens\, including six United States Presidents as well as Ambassadors\, Senators\, Congressmen and Supreme Court Justices\, all singled out for their exemplary service to the United States. In 2012\, she was a recipient of the esteemed USA Artist Fellowship grant\, singled out as one of the most innovative and influential artists in America\, becoming the first Irish traditional musician to do so. In 2013 she won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Music Awards and was also named Grand Marshal of the Yonkers parade in New York. 2015\, Joanie was named Clare Person of the Year by the County Clare Association in New York and also the recipient of the Turlough O’Carolan Award for her musical legacy. In 2016\, Irish America Magazine named Joanie as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Irish Women in the world. \nMARY COOGAN was born in New York and raised in a musical household. She is a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. Her mother came from Castlerea in County Roscommon and her father Jim was a great accordion player whose parents emigrated from County Waterford. Her father passed down his love of Irish music to Mary and she became a self-taught guitar\, mandolin and bouzouki player. In addition to her outstanding musical talents\, Mary also holds her masters degree in education and was named in Who’s Who among American Teachers. She has a number of recordings including a beautiful solo album entitled; “Christmas” and also one with her father called “Passing Time”\, but her close ties to children pushed her to make a wonderful collection of music with her great friend Kathy Ludlowe for our young fans entitled\, “The Big Ship Sails.” She continues to teach music to children in New York and is a highly sought-after accompanist. Acoustic Guitar Magazine named Mary one of the top four Celtic guitarists in Celtic music. \nMIRELLA MURRAY grew up in Claddaghduff on the northwest coast of Connemara in County Galway. Her father John Joe\, a notable sean nós dancer\, came from Inishark Island and had a deep understanding and love for traditional music. Mirella studied the piano accordion with Mary Finn and it was at music classes that she met up with fiddler Liz Kane from Letterfrack. Mirella won the accordion All-Ireland championship and duet All-Ireland championship with Liz Kane. \nMirella teamed up with the great fiddle player Tola Custy from Co. She has accumulated a vast store of tunes from her travels\, and musicians such as Sharon Shannon\, Lunasa and the Bumblebees credit her as a source for many uncommon melodies. \nKATHLEEN BOYLE from Glasgow\, Scotland comes from a family steeped in the traditional music of Donegal. Her father Hughie is a talented musician and handed down his love of music to her. Kathleen is a talented pianist and accordion player and has won All-Scotland and All-Britain titles on both instruments. \nIn 1999\, Kathleen made history as the first graduate to gain a degree in traditional music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Dochas was voted best newcomers at the 2004 Scots Traditional Music Awards and nominated as best folk band in 2006. Her latest recording\, “Back to Donegal”\, is an album she recorded with her father and family members. \nNOLLAIG CASEY is one of Ireland’s most gifted musicians\, with her own unique way of playing traditional Irish music on the fiddle and has such a distinctive sound that it would be impossible to mistake it for that of anyone else. This “sound” is so attractive to other musicians that there exists hardly any major Irish artist of the last thirty years with whom she has not worked – and many international artists have been equally entranced. \nA graduate from University College Cork with a Bachelors in Music Degree at the exceptionally early age of nineteen\, she embarked upon a professional career first joining the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra where she remained for three years until she joined the ground breaking Irish band\, Planxty. \nIn addition to her work with Cherish the Ladies\, Nollaig has recorded and worked with Enya\, Van Morrison\, Sinéad O’Connor\, Nanci Griffith\, Ricky Skaggs\, Rod Stewart\, Dónal Lunny\, Mary Black\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, Carlos Nuñez\, Jim Rooney\, Andy Irvine\, Moving Hearts\, The Indigo Girls\, Spandau Ballet\, Christy Moore\, Liam O’Flynn\, Dan ar Bras\, Sharon Shannon\, Maura O’Connell\, Dick Gaughan\, Paddy Keenan\, Máirtín O’Connor. He hails from Galway City and the clarity and richness of his voice and the emotion with which he delivers his songs\, has been compared with the best ballad singers that Ireland has ever produced. Don’s award winning debut solo album “Start of a Dream” was released in 2006 to critical acclaim and his version of Richard Thompsons classic song\, “Dimming of the Day” won vocal cut of the year from the 2010 Live Ireland awards. His passionate singing and majestic voice guarantees a most impressive performance in front of a live audience as those who have seen him perform in Ireland\, Europe and the USA can attest to. 2011 was a year to remember for Don\, as he was one of the finalists in one of Ireland most watched TV programs\, The All Ireland Talent Show. His continued popularity and support from viewers provided him with many weeks of performing to live audiences of up to 800\,000 tuning in weekly. Irish American super group; Cherish The Ladies invited Don to join them on their summer tour of Ireland and Scotland and also further touring consisting of 18 States in America as part of their Christmas Tour. The band’s leader Joanie Madden introduces Stiffe as\, “One of the greatest singers Ireland has ever produced”. In December 2011 Don released his second album “Lifes Journey” and one of Don’s own songs from that album\, Somebody Special\, was recently awarded Song of the Year from the Live Ireland Awards. After a short period of time\, he was invited to take over as the lead and to star as the principle male dancer. His travels as the principal dancer took him all around the globe where he performed to standing only crowds in over 30 countries. Jason has recently been developing a new concept of Irish dance that attempts to break the barriers and traditional restraints that have been placed on this engaging art form. \nGARRETT COLEMAN As a native of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, Garrett was trained in traditional Irish step dance at the Burke School under the tutelage of the internationally renowned Theresa Burke. Despite his traditional background\, Garrett has consistently found himself drawn to rhythmically innovative types of movement that push the boundaries of athleticism through dance. In addition to Irish Step\, he has trained in hip hop\, tap\, and contemporary movement. \nCompetitively\, Garrett was named the two-time World Champion (2004\, 2005) and All Ireland Champion (2004). He is also a nine-time Mid-American Champion and has held the North American title six times. SUMMARY:THE SADIES W/ SPECIAL GUESTS
DESCRIPTION:The Sadies w/ special guests return to Buffalo Iron Works on Saturday December 2nd\, 2023! \nThe Sadies \nAs we all know\, the ‘press release’ is a tool meant to announce and promote a new recording project. A jaded and unreliable sales-pitch at best\, the usual ‘bio’ invariably attempts to describe the project in question as some sort of second coming. But how do you sell sounds? The critics’ voice must be heard at all costs\, but this is something else entirely. Obviously\, this is an ad. \nKnowing what you’re getting is all anyone really wants to know. The details of how the recording is made might be interesting\, but they aren’t exactly crucial to the listening process. In our case\, comparisons can be misleading too\, because The Sadies don’t really fit tidily into any genre\, or even sub-genre. We aren’t really ‘pre or post’ anything and we don’t have the right hair-cuts or hats for any particular scene. Can’t really call us modern or retro either. We certainly don’t claim to have re-invented the wheel. We just are. And have been for a very long time. So\, all that matters is the music itself\, right? \nAfter making so many records\, some things get easier. Most things do not. But just because it’s harder doesn’t mean it isn’t better. I think it’s gotten easier to know when we are on to something and that’s in no small part due to working with Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire/Belle Orchestre) as producer. We put in a lot of hard work but he always made it easy and fun. This is\, of course\, totally irrelevant to your listening experience. \nWe began this recording well over a year before the plague began and completed it in June 2021. The studio we worked at in Quebec is perfectly calibrated to our claustrophobia. It was mostly engineered by Pietro Amato (Belle Orchestre/etc.)\, who is great at everything he does when he’s not doing something else. Jon Spencer (Jon Spencer!!!) was kind enough to intervene and rescue a song for us. My folks play on it. There was a church™ involved. Curfews were broken. Borders were crossed stealthily. Sean did all of the artwork. Travis and Mike did a lot of driving. I did the bio. \nColder Streams is a record made with love by loved ones. The Sadies have released a lot of records. This is one of them. \nDo any bands make their best work this far along in their career? I can think of artists who still make great music after all these years\, but their best? Yet\, here we are and that’s what I’m accusing us of. I think it’s our best but I’ve been wrong before. All I ask is that you listen to a few songs and decide for yourself what it sounds like. If you like it\, you’ll know what to do. But my description of the music would just be punishing for the both of us. \nI guess all that really needs to be said here is that if you like The Sadies\, you will definitely want to get Colder Streams. If you disliked or felt indifferent towards The Sadies\, you will definitely want to get Colder Streams. If you’ve never heard The Sadies and yet you’re still reading\, you too will definitely want to get Colder Streams. \nBut unfortunately\, it’s sold out. \nBuffalo Iron Works \n49 Illinois St Buffalo\, NY 14203 \nTickets: $15 ADV/$20 DOS \nDoors: 7:00pm \nShow: 8:00pm \nAges: 18+
