DESCRIPTION:Underground Springhouse brings their evening of the Grateful Dead & Widespread Panic to Buffalo Iron Works on Monday October 9th\, 2023! \nUnderground Springhouse \n“More of the good\, less of the bad.” That’s the motto upon which Underground Springhouse have built their sound and style. Exploring reggae\, country\, and funk influences within a rock ‘n roll context\, Springhouse has crafted a genre-bending catalog that takes listeners from beaches to back roads with ear-worm hooks and head-bobbing grooves. \nTheir debut single\, “Joyfell” (2018)\, has caught the ears of listeners around the country\, galvanizing the band to become the touring and recording machine that they are today. Springhouse has since released a full length album\, “Underground Springhouse” (2021)\, and two EPs\, “Tom Foolery” (2019) and “I Recall” (2023)\, as well as a number of one-off singles. Their most recent EP\, “I Recall\,” features five new songs and showcases the band’s honing of their songwriting craft. On certain tracks the group explores newer influences like bluegrass and Americana\, while on others they expand on more familiar styles like reggae and funk. All the while\, the band stays true to their motto and their sound by including sing-along choruses and dance-worthy rhythms across the EP. \nThe band’s consistent recording output and dedicated touring schedule have helped grow their audience from a college town phenomenon into a frenetic mass of music lovers\, particularly in the Southeast and along the East Coast\, where Springhouse has headlined such venues as Athens’ Georgia Theatre\, Nashville’s Exit/In\, Birmingham’s Avondale Brewing\, Brooklyn Made\, Pearl Street Warehouse\, Asheville’s Salvage Station\, and Atlanta’s Terminal West. Fans should expect the unexpected at a Springhouse concert as no two shows look the same. DESCRIPTION:The Lemon Twigs w/ Joanna Sternberg make their Buffalo Iron Works debut on Tuesday October 10th\, 2023! \nThe Lemon Twigs \nOn Everything Harmony\, the fourth full-length studio release from New York’s The Lemon Twigs\, the prodigiously talented brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario offer 13 original servings of beauty that showcase an emotional depth and musical sophistication far beyond their years as a band\, let alone as young men. While they eagerly devour musical influences from everything and everywhere\, they have somehow arrived at a cohesive and dynamic sound that speaks to our troubled times. \nHaving bounded onto the music scene with their precocious 2016 debut Do Hollywood\, they threw caution to the wind two years later on their followup Goto School. By the time of their third album\, Songs for the General Public (2020) The Lemon Twigs had begun to pull from a wide range of multigenerational inspirations\, expertly darting from twee chamber pop balladry to full on glam punk\, mixing plaintive singer-songwriter confessionals with an almost Syd Barrett sense of outré pop.In an interview from the time\, they expressed an interest in creating “something really beautiful sounding” based on vocal harmonies and developing their combined melodic sensibilities into a setting where “the sounds were as important as the songs” themselves. \nOn Everything Harmony\, the brothers have fully realized that vision\, with a unified “Lemon Twigs sound” that successfully blends their distinct personalities while giving voice to their diverse and eclectic influences. Opening the album with the unassuming acoustic folk of plaintive “When Winter Comes Around\,” which echoes the sophisticated grandeur of classic Simon & Garfunkel recordings\, they immediately switch things up to the sunny classic pop motif of “In My Head.” From that point on Everything Harmony makes it clear that the Lemon Twigs can’t be pinned down. \nHaving recently worked with friends like Natalie Mering\, with whom they appeared on the latest Weyes Blood album\, they also collaborated with classic rock hero Todd Rundgren on his most recent album\, Space Force. Rundgren\, himself no stranger to eclecticism\, says he can relate to their time-tripping approach to contemporary pop. \n“They started when they were five and six years old\, doing TV and Broadway and things like that\,” says Rundgren. “So\, they have built-in appreciation for music that is of a couple of generations before theirs. I think they were bored by the music of their own generation\, and since you can’t fast forward to the music of the future\, you just start going backwards to music that was made before you were born. I can empathize with that impulse\, because I did that too\, back in the seventies.” \nReleased as the album teaser track\, “Corner of My Eye” channels an Art Garfunkel-like vocal melody over a moody\, vibraphone-tinged backing track suggesting the chamber pop of Brian Wilson. \nEverything Harmony was mostly written and recorded between 2020 and 2021\, when tracking for the album began at a “very chaotic” rehearsal studio in Manhattan. \n“It was one of the noisiest places I’ve ever been\,” says Brian. “We did takes of acoustic guitar in between metal bands rehearsing next door and fire engines roaring down 8th Avenue. After months of sessions there\, where we recorded the basic tracks to ‘Corner Of My Eye’\, ‘In My Head\,’ ‘I Don’t Belong To Me\,’ ‘WhatHappens To A Heart\,’ ‘Ghost Run Free\,’ and ‘New To Me\,’ we decided enough was enough and we looked into studios that had acoustic echo chambers after hearingEast West’s chambers during the recording of Weyes Blood’s latest record.” \nThey finally got out of town\, but instead of ‘doing Hollywood’ again\, they took the tapes to San Francisco’s Hyde Street Studios where they added the album’s omnipresent vibraphone textures\, harpsichord\, French horn\, strings\, and many layers of vocal harmonies. To finish up\, they flew home to their brand new studio in Brooklyn to finish mixing and mastering with the help of Paul Millar of Bug Sound. \nBrian D’Addario notes the influence of two late lamented artists in particular this time; Moondog\, and Arthur Russell whose album Iowa Dream encouraged them to lean into their own melodic tendencies and keep the arrangements delicate. \n“Their arrangements entered my head when we were arranging the strings on the album\,”says Brian\, “and we worked for a long time on our vocal blend. On previous records\, whoever wrote the song might do most\, if not all\, of the harmonies on their track but not so much on this one. Our blend is a strength that we tried to exploit as much as possible.” \nWhile they had no grand concept for EverythingHarmony\, both the D’Addarios felt a “palpable mood of defeat” prevailed while writing and recording it. “New To Me” was inspired by their shared experience with loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s\, “What You Were Doing” is dressed in the tortured jangle of vintage Big Star\, while “Born To Be Lonely\,” written after watching John Cassavetes’ Opening Night\, deals with what Brian calls “the fragility that often comes with age.” \n“The album cycles through moments of depression and isolation on songs like ‘WhatHappens To A Heart\,’ or ‘Born To Be Lonely’ to episodes of dizzying euphoria in‘Ghost Run Free’ or the title track. There’s very little middle ground. On‘What Happens to A Heart’ we were going for a 70’s Spector vibe\, along the lines of Leonard Cohen’s Death Of A Ladies Man. We tracked it with me on piano\, Daryl Johns on electric bass and Michael and Andres Valbuena both playing drums. I overdubbed a fretless bass. Two pianos\, two organs\, harpsichord\, and celeste. The basic track was done in New York\, and strings and French horn recorded in San Francisco. We got the Friction Quartet to overdub themselves about 8 times to get a more symphonic sound. We also recorded about 8 acoustics and bounced them down to two tracks; we did the same with the electric guitars.” \nEverything Harmony is a unified song cycle born of shared blood and common purpose. With two musical heads being better than one\, there’s no shortage of ideas to draw on. Their only impediments are time and the challenge of keeping up with their own prolific musical inspiration. \n“We share an intuition and tend to be influenced by one another\,” says Brian\, “so the lyrical ideas on this record tend to complement each other. Writing has never been the issue for us. It’s completing\, editing and compiling that takes the time. Each story is graphically depicted in a huge chalk mural inside the silo. \nThe Evil Stories \nCostumed guides will bring to life the deadly and amazing stories spanning more than 350 years of local history during this 50 minute indoor walking tour. The stories are graphically depicted by giant chalk hand drawn murals created by a local artist exclusively for this event. \nStories include: \nA local Jack the Ripper Suspect\nWhen Buffalo was burned to the ground\nA Ouija Board love-triangle topless model murder\nPlus many others!\nTours \nTours are offered at the massive abandoned grain silo located at RiverWorks on Thursdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays and Sundays in late September and throughout October at various times. DESCRIPTION:A Clearing View\nCharles E. Burchfield Reframed \nOct 13\, 2023 – Jan 28\, 2024\nCharles E. Burchfield was one of the great American artists of the 20th century\, but his work is sometimes overlooked as are many works on paper\, because they cannot be left on museum walls for years at a time. They are also shown behind glass\, which presents viewers with reflections of themselves\, distorting the work itself. This exhibition is the beginning of an effort to both literally and metaphorically reframe his paintings and offer an unencumbered view of his brilliant work\, properly presented and celebrated the way it can be today. \nThe 1930s were an important time in Burchfield’s career. It was during this decade that his work was featured in the first solo exhibition ever held at the then new Museum of Modern Art in New York City. After quitting his job at the Birge Wallpaper company in 1929\, Burchfield was finally able to devote all of his energy to painting. Around the same time\, he started building his own frames to display his work. On August 29\, 1934\, he wrote in his journal: \nWorking these last few days again on frames; it is hard work\, but at times enjoyable. Even the mechanical uncreative parts\, such as rubbing with sand-paper or using the rasp are a physical pleasure\, like walking or swimming. \nWorks from this period\, often presented in large dramatic frames with rustic finishes\, are excellent illustrations of how Burchfield himself intended for the work to be seen. Most of the best examples have little or no matt bordering the work and are presented in the way one might expect to see an oil painting. \nModern glass\, used in everything from windows and lenses to fiberglass and fiber optic cables\, is a building block for civilization. In windows\, it protects people from the elements. Lens technology has allowed people to see more clearly as their sight fails them. Burchfield himself needed glasses to continue painting. On November 24\, 1939\, he wrote: \nA.M. When I tried to draw in the studio\, I found I could not focus on the work at arm’s length. Alarmed\, I called Dr. Bennett\, who\, instead of assuring me it could be remedied\, said it presented quite a problem\, and would I see him at 5:00 P.M. So I had a bad hour or so\, until I reasoned out myself\, that an extra pair of glasses\, with more space for intermediate work\, and less for distance\, should do the trick.  \nIn his journals\, Burchfield often spoke of weather clearing after a storm as the rain or wind that ravaged the landscape moved away. This exhibition does the same. Like those new glasses\, it offers a clearing view of work too long distorted by obsolete glass. By reframing Burchfield’s work\, we also re-present his legacy and its importance in a world that needs his love of nature and his focus on the details in the world around us that anyone can connect with and enjoy.

DESCRIPTION:John Wood: The System is Alive \nOct 13\, 2023 – Apr 28\, 2024\nJohn C. Wood (1922-2012) was an educator and artist whose practice transcended divisions of media. Wood taught with distinction at Alfred University from 1954 to 1987 where he developed the photo\, graphic design\, book arts\, printmaking\, and foundation programs in the School of Art & Design. Wood was a revered and influential professor who described his aesthetic practice as “being in the state of drawing” and grounded in his personalized forms of “System Drawing.” These philosophies\, prominent throughout this exhibition\, are the connective tissue for his life’s work.  \nThe exhibition focuses on the relationship between Wood’s visual scholarship and its expression through diverse media\, extending through more than 25 different forms and variants. Among the media are drawings on various substrates\, including a range of papers\, rocks\, and sand\, and an equivalent variety of print media\, including intaglio\, etching\, lithographs\, woodcuts\, silkscreen\, and photography. The photographic works are themselves in a range of formats\, from cyanotypes to multi-media collages. Many of the works seen here have never been exhibited before. In his work\, Wood did not offer answers to questions\, instead presenting pathways for consideration. His work took on a range of subjects\, but ultimately\, they were platforms for conversation on topics of environmental\, political\, and social concerns.  \nNearly all Wood’s notes\, writings on art\, and preparatory works have been held and archived by members of his family. This record of achievement and discovery stretching from 1948 into the new millennium has not previously been studied.  John Wood: The System is Alive represents an in-depth examination of close to 400 of Wood’s notebooks\, sketchbooks\, one-of-a-kind experimental artist’s books\, and unframed preliminary drawings bringing forth a profound reinterpretation and radically new appreciation of the depth and breadth of an artist generally remembered as master photographer and educator.   \nWood’s artwork is in collections nationally. These include Baltimore Museum of Art\, Center for Creative Photography\, George Eastman House\, J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles County Museum\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The National Gallery of Canada\, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery\, and many others. This exhibition\, curated by Joseph Scheer and organized with help from the supportive team at the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University is presented with support from the Tower Family Fund\, and the Wendt Foundation\, Thanks to Carol Wood and family for all of their great work and Anthony Bannon\, PhD for his review and advice on the broad spectrum of the artist’s career.

The record won Best Progressive R&B Album at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards and features musical contributions from Ty Dolla $ign\, Childish Gambino\, Lil B\, Kamasi Washington\, Steve Lacy\, Steve Arrington\, BADBADNOTGOOD\, Louis Cole\, Pedro Martins and Zack Fox. Thundercat produced the record with his longtime partner Flying Lotus\, who was GRAMMY-nominated in the “Producer of the Year” category for his work on the album. \nIt Is What It Is follows Bruner’s game-changing third album Drunk (2017)\, which completed his transition from virtuoso bassist to bonafide star and cemented his reputation as a unique voice that transcends genre. “This album is about love\, loss\, life and the ups and downs that come with that\,” Bruner says about It Is What It Is. Concurrently\, the tragic passing of his friend Mac Miller in September 2018 had a profound effect on Thundercat and the making of It Is What It Is. “Losing Mac was extremely difficult\,” he explains. “I had to take that pain in and learn from it and grow from it. It sobered me up… it shook the ground for all of us in the artist community.” Thundercat poignantly describes the album as “a bit tongue-in-cheek\, but at different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand… some things just aren’t meant to be understood.” Clearly\, however\, fans understood It Is What It Is\, an unexpectedly apt title for when it arrived. In addition to its Grammy win\, the album and its songs landed on dozens of year-end lists and roundups at Pitchfork\, Stereogum\, NPR\, Vulture\, and Allmusic to name a few. \nPrevious releases include The Golden Age of Apocalypse (2011)\, Apocalypse (2013)\, followed by EP The Beyond / Where The Giants Roam featuring the modern classic “Them Changes.” He was later “at the creative epicenter” (per Rolling Stone) of the 21st century’s most influential hip-hop album Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly\, where he won a Grammy for his collaboration on the track “These Walls” before releasing his third album Drunk in 2017. \nOutside of his solo work\, Thundercat keeps busy across numerous genres. In 2021\, his dreamy vocals and masterful bass playing feature on “Black Gold\,” the theme song for the Netflix original anime Yasuke\, soundtracked by Flying Lotus. In addition\, Thundercat recently collaborated on releases from Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars & Anderson Paak)\, HAIM\, H.E.R.\, and Kaytranada\, as well as contributing an original song for the final season and soundtrack from HBO’s ‘Insecure.’ \nThundercat’s latest work has seen him branching outside of music\, making his television debut with a recurring role as The Modifier in the Star Wars series ‘The Book of Boba Fett\,’ and appearing as the face of recent fashion/brand campaigns for Kerwin Frost and Kenny Beats\, as well as attending Paris Fashion Week as a guest of Spanish luxury designer LOEWE. \nThe name Thundercat refers to the cartoon he’s loved since childhood and an extension of his wide-eyed\, vibrant\, often superhuman approach to his craft.
