About Steve Mesler

Steve Mesler: Buffalo’s Olympic Champion

Born on August 28, 1978, Steve Mesler has not only achieved greatness on the global stage of bobsledding but also become an inspiring figure for athletes and dreamers everywhere. Hailing from Buffalo, NY, Mesler’s life and career are a testament to how a supportive, hardworking community can lay the foundation for world-class success.

Early Life in Buffalo

Steve Mesler’s story begins in Buffalo, a city known for its close-knit communities and enduring resilience. Growing up in Western New York, Mesler was surrounded by the region’s trademark blue-collar determination, the same spirit that shapes so many of its athletes. Buffalo, with its long winters and emphasis on toughness, gave Steve the tools to face challenges head-on.

During his childhood, Mesler displayed an impressive athletic ability and competitive spirit. Although bobsledding wasn’t a common sport in the area, Steve’s early focus was on track and field. A standout sprinter and hurdler in high school, he quickly earned recognition as one of Buffalo’s brightest young athletic talents. He attended City Honors School, where his dedication to academics and athletics set him apart. The balance of sports and education that Buffalo instilled early on would serve him well in his future endeavors.

Transition to Bobsledding

After graduating, Steve attended the University of Florida, where he competed as a decathlete on the school’s prestigious track and field team. While his primary focus remained on track and field, injuries began to take a toll on his career. It was during this time that Mesler discovered an unexpected avenue to channel his exceptional athleticism—bobsledding.

The transition from sprinting and hurdling to racing down an icy track in a high-speed sled might seem improbable at first glance, but Steve’s raw power, speed, and tenacity made him a natural fit for the sport. Once he joined the U.S. Bobsled team in 2001, it became clear that he had made the right choice. His Buffalo upbringing, marked by perseverance and grit, allowed him to thrive in a demanding and often unforgiving sport.

Olympic Glory

Steve Mesler’s bobsledding career would ultimately reach its pinnacle at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Competing as a member of the four-man U.S. bobsled team, Mesler played a key role in delivering one of the most iconic victories in the sport’s history. Guided by his team’s determination and exceptional performance, the U.S. captured gold in the event—the first American team to do so in bobsledding since 1948, ending a 62-year drought.

Mesler’s Olympic gold medal marked a personal and national milestone. It was the culmination of years of hard work, discipline, and collaboration, and the victory brought immense pride to Buffalo, where the community celebrated the triumph of one of their own.

Buffalo’s Impact on His Journey

Born and raised in Buffalo, Steve frequently credits the city and its people for shaping his character and work ethic. Buffalo’s enduring sense of community gave him the confidence to take on challenges that were far outside the norm for an upstate New York native. The city’s cold climate may not have direct ties to bobsledding, but it provided him the mental toughness needed to thrive in harsh and unpredictable environments.

Steve’s success further underscored Buffalo’s reputation for producing resilient, hardworking athletes who make their mark on the world stage. His bond with his hometown remains strong, and he continues to carry Buffalo’s spirit with him, whether he’s on the podium or inspiring others through his work.

Life Beyond the Olympics

Since retiring from bobsledding, Steve Mesler has channeled his energy into uplifting others, particularly young people. Perhaps his most lasting contribution off the sled is his work as the co-founder of Classroom Champions, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting students with mentors in the form of Olympians, Paralympians, and professional athletes. The organization provides valuable lessons on goal-setting, leadership, and perseverance to students from diverse backgrounds.

Through Classroom Champions, Mesler helps bridge the gap between inspiring role models and the younger generation, ensuring that his legacy extends far beyond his athletic achievements. The initiative reflects his passion for education, a value cultivated during his years in Buffalo’s schools and community.

When not working with Classroom Champions, Mesler is deeply involved in public speaking, motivating others to strive for their own forms of excellence. His story of resilience and adaptability resonates with audiences across different walks of life, further establishing his role as a positive force in the sports world and beyond.

Legacy and Inspiration

Steve Mesler’s accomplishments have left an indelible mark both in and outside of sports. Winning Olympic gold is a rare and remarkable achievement, but his true legacy lies in the way he has used his platform to uplift others. For Buffalo, Steve represents more than just athletic success—he is a symbol of what can be achieved when determination and a strong sense of community come together.

Mesler’s story serves as inspiration for athletes of all skill levels and backgrounds, particularly those from smaller cities like Buffalo. By showing that nothing is out of reach with hard work and focus, he exemplifies the best of his hometown’s values. Steve Mesler’s achievements remind us that greatness can come from anywhere and that sometimes, the resilience and drive forged in a snow-covered city like Buffalo can lead to golden moments on the world stage.

For Buffalo and the world, he remains a role model—not just as an athlete, but as a person dedicated to giving back and sharing the lessons of success.

Early Life in Buffalo

Growing up in Buffalo, Marcus Foligno was immersed in hockey culture from a young age. It’s no surprise, as his father, Mike Foligno, was a former NHL player and coach who played six seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. Spending his formative years in a hockey family, Marcus’s path to the sport began naturally on the frozen ponds and rinks scattered throughout Western New York.

Buffalo offered the perfect atmosphere for a budding hockey player. With a passionate fan base and a community that embraces its athletes, Marcus thrived in an environment that celebrated teamwork, resilience, and determination. These qualities became a bedrock for his career, shaping him into the player he is today.

A Rising Star on the Ice

Following in his father’s footsteps, Marcus honed his skills in juniors with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Under his father’s watchful guidance—Mike was also the coach of the Wolves—Marcus flourished as a physical forward and team leader. His combination of size, strength, and hockey sense made him stand out, leading to his selection in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.

Making his NHL debut with the Sabres during the 2011-12 season was a defining moment. Not only did it mark the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, but it also represented the continuation of the Foligno family tradition within Buffalo’s beloved franchise. During his rookie season, his standout performance included a memorable goal streak that quickly cemented his place in the hearts of Sabres fans.

Marcus played for Buffalo until 2017, embodying the city’s hardworking ethos each time he stepped on the ice. Known for his physicality and willingness to stick up for his teammates, he became a fan favorite for his tenacity and heart.

Thriving in Minnesota

After being traded to the Minnesota Wild in 2017, Marcus shifted into a leadership role that further showcased his development as a player. With the Wild, Foligno evolved into one of the NHL’s best defensive forwards, balancing his physical style with responsible play on both ends of the rink. Often deployed to shut down opponents’ top players, Marcus became a core part of Minnesota’s success.

A career milestone came during the 2022-23 season when Marcus reached his 500th NHL game, a testament to his consistency and resilience over the years. While his offensive numbers improved as his career progressed, it’s his leadership and grit that have made him an invaluable player on the ice and in the locker room.
