About Howard Bloom

Howard Bloom: Buffalo’s Renaissance Mind

Born on June 25, 1943, in Buffalo, NY, Howard Bloom is a prolific thinker, author, and publicist whose contributions span science, pop culture, and philosophy. Known for his unorthodox ideas and groundbreaking work, Bloom’s career is a testament to the power of curiosity and deep introspection. From his childhood in Buffalo to his international achievements, Howard Bloom’s story is one of constant discovery and intellectual adventure.

Early Life in Buffalo

Howard Bloom’s origins in Buffalo shaped his inquisitive nature and intellectual boldness. Growing up in a city known for its industrious spirit and cultural diversity, Bloom found himself drawn to the sciences and philosophy from a young age. The quiet winters likely provided him with ample time to devour books, while Buffalo’s resilient, hard-working ethos fostered his determination.

Though he later described himself as a “science nerd,” Bloom’s interests were far from limited to textbooks. He immersed himself in the worlds of both art and science, seeking answers to humanity’s biggest questions. This spirit of interdisciplinary curiosity began right in his hometown—a place that mixed blue-collar grit with an appreciation for education and creativity.

From Science to Publicity

Howard Bloom’s career path was anything but ordinary. After studying at university, he initially pursued a trajectory focused on science. However, his fascination with human nature and his knack for communication opened a new door, leading him to the world of publicity during the 1970s and 80s.

Bloom became one of the most influential music publicists of the modern era, working with some of the biggest names in pop and rock history. His client roster included legends like Michael Jackson, Prince, Billy Joel, and Earth, Wind & Fire—artists who defined cultural movements. Bloom had a rare ability to connect with creative minds and amplify their talents, helping them reach not only their audiences but also cultural icon status.

His time as a publicist reflected the duality of his mind—rooted in both emotional insight and analytical thinking, he mastered melding artistic visions into powerful narratives.

The Rise of the Thinker

After stepping away from the music industry, Bloom’s career took another fascinating turn—into the realm of authorship and intellectual exploration. His books combine scientific inquiry with philosophical musings, reflecting the wide range of his interests.

Some of his most notable works include:

“The Lucifer Principle” (1995): A provocative exploration of power, violence, and societal evolution, this book examines the darker corners of human behavior through the lens of biology and psychology.

“Global Brain” (2000): This work presents the idea of humanity as a collective intelligence, drawing comparisons with the interconnected behaviors of complex biological systems.

“The Genius of the Beast” (2010): Bloom offers a bold take on capitalism’s strengths and its creative power, blending economic theory with cultural commentary.

“The God Problem” (2012): An ambitious challenge to conventional ideas about science and divinity, this book poses deep questions about the universe and our place in it.

These works have cemented Bloom’s reputation as a creative thinker unafraid to tackle complex and controversial topics. His ideas blend science, sociology, and storytelling—traits that may well have their roots in the curious, community-oriented spirit he absorbed in Buffalo.

Buffalo’s Impact on His Vision

Although Howard Bloom’s career has taken him far from Buffalo, the city’s influence remains clear. Growing up in a milieu that valued hard work, authenticity, and resilience, he carried these traits into every field he entered. Buffalo’s industrial roots and blend of cultures may well have inspired Bloom’s interdisciplinary mindset.

The “roll-up-your-sleeves” mentality of Buffalo is apparent in Bloom’s tireless pursuit of ideas. Whether he was crafting a marketing strategy for a global superstar or writing a book that challenges traditional thinking, his work ethic has been unmistakable.

Personal Life and Philosophies

Howard Bloom is as fascinating personally as he is professionally. Despite being a global thinker, he is deeply introspective, finding joy in small moments of creativity and discovery. Bloom has publicly discussed his experience with chronic illness, which led him to retreat from the spotlight at times. However, this chapter of his life only fueled his insights into the human condition, inspiring him to explore resilience, determination, and the interplay between struggle and creativity.

Bloom’s work often emphasizes humanity’s interconnectedness—an idea that mirrors his Buffalo upbringing in a close-knit, collaborative community. His philosophies extend beyond academia; they resonate on a deeply human level, offering lessons in both individual growth and collective evolution.

A Timeless Influence

Today, Howard Bloom continues to inspire through his writing, lectures, and interviews. His multidisciplinary approach to life and learning sets him apart as a thinker who can bridge the worlds of science, art, and popular culture. Buffalo, NY, can proudly claim him as one of its most original minds—a figure whose work transcends boundaries and reminds us of the value of curiosity, resilience, and the courage to question everything.

Howard Bloom’s story proves that a childhood in the Queen City can spark a life full of global influence and intellectual legacy. He is a testament to the idea that where you begin—whether on the snowy streets of Buffalo or elsewhere—can be the foundation for an extraordinary path.

About Lawrence Block

Lawrence Block: Buffalo’s Literary Crime Mastermind

Born on June 24, 1938, in Buffalo, NY, Lawrence Block has become an enduring figure in the world of crime fiction. Best known for his gripping storytelling and memorable characters, Block’s works have enthralled readers for decades. With dozens of novels, short stories, and awards to his name, he’s left an indelible mark on the literary world. And while his career has spanned the globe, it all began in the vibrant city of Buffalo, NY—a place that laid the foundations for his creative genius.

Early Life in Buffalo

Lawrence Block grew up in Buffalo during the late 1930s and 1940s, a time when the city was bustling with industry, innovation, and a strong sense of community. The cultural richness of Buffalo, coupled with its long, snowy winters, may have sparked Block’s imaginative tendencies. Surrounded by the city’s hardworking spirit, Block developed not only a solid work ethic but also an innate curiosity about people, places, and stories—the hallmarks of a great writer.

Buffalo’s mix of blue-collar grit and cultural sophistication seemingly seeped into Block’s later works, many of which capture the struggles and complexities of everyday life. While details of his early interest in writing remain scarce, it’s clear that his Buffalo upbringing gave him a keen understanding of character and setting, both of which are critical elements in his fiction.

A Prolific Career

Lawrence Block began his writing career modestly, penning short stories for paperback anthologies in the late 1950s. From there, he quickly established himself as a master of suspense and mystery, building a reputation for vivid storytelling and groundbreaking creativity. His breakout works came in the form of hardboiled detective series that introduced readers to some of the genre’s most memorable characters.

Perhaps his most famous creation is Matthew Scudder, an ex-cop turned private investigator who battles personal demons while solving crimes in gritty, realistic settings. Scudder first appeared in The Sins of the Fathers (1976) and has continued to captivate readers throughout a series of novels that explore themes of morality, redemption, and justice.

Another beloved character is Bernie Rhodenbarr, the mischievous yet charming burglar-turned-amateur sleuth featured in Block’s lighthearted Burglar series. These books showcase Block’s ability to weave humor and suspense, offering a refreshing take on the crime genre.

Block’s talent isn’t confined to novels. He’s also an accomplished short story writer, penning numerous collections and anthologies that stand as testaments to his versatility. His work has earned him countless accolades, including Edgar, Shamus, and Anthony Awards, and he was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1994—one of the highest honors in his field.

Buffalo’s Influence on Block’s Stories

Though much of Lawrence Block’s writing is set in New York City and other locales, one can’t help but detect the influence of his Buffalo roots. The city’s gritty underbelly, juxtaposed with its sense of community and resilience, is mirrored in the dynamic worlds Block creates.

Buffalo’s working-class ethos seems to permeate Block’s ability to write deeply flawed yet relatable characters. His protagonists, like Matthew Scudder, often grapple with moral ambiguity, personal struggles, and the banality of crime—elements that suggest a writer who’s familiar with the complexities of human nature.

Even though Buffalo doesn’t always serve as a direct setting in his works, the city’s influence is evident in Block’s atmospheric prose. Readers can trace the inspiration in his use of richly textured settings, whether it’s a seedy urban back alley or a cozy bookstore backdrop.

Beyond Writing

Lawrence Block’s life is as colorful as the characters he creates. Known for his wit and straightforward manner, Block has also written extensively about the craft of writing. His non-fiction works, such as Telling Lies for Fun and Profit and Write For Your Life, share insightful tips and anecdotes, making him a mentor to countless aspiring authors over the years.

Block’s adventures in life and writing have taken him to many corners of the globe, but he remains grounded in the art of storytelling. Despite achieving fame, his work still exudes the authenticity of someone who writes for the sheer love of creating compelling narratives.

A Literary Legacy

At 85, Lawrence Block’s impact on the literary world continues to grow. With well over 50 novels to his name, including standalone works and series that have etched themselves into the annals of crime fiction, Block’s legacy is enduring and vast. His ability to move seamlessly between dark, serious themes and lighthearted, quirky tales keeps readers coming back for more.

Buffalo, NY, can take pride in being the birthplace of one of the most celebrated voices in crime fiction. Block’s life and career remind us that a strong foundation, nurtured by family, community, and curiosity, can propel someone to global success.

A Hometown Hero

Though Lawrence Block’s stories have taken readers far from Buffalo, the city’s impact on his life and work remains clear. From the grit of its streets to the warmth of its people, Buffalo lives on in the pages of his books, woven into the heart of his storytelling. For his hometown, Lawrence Block is more than just a literary icon—he’s proof that even the snowiest of cities can produce a blazing creative talent.

About Joyce Carol Oates

Joyce Carol Oates – A Literary Icon from Buffalo

Buffalo, NY, has a storied history of producing individuals who excel in diverse fields. Among its most celebrated is Joyce Carol Oates, a literary powerhouse whose prolific writing has left an indelible legacy in American literature. Born on June 16, 1938, in Lockport, just outside Buffalo, Oates’ roots in Western New York shaped her worldview and storytelling. Over the course of her extraordinary career, she has become one of the most influential and decorated writers of her time.

Early Life in Buffalo

Joyce Carol Oates grew up in Millersport, a rural farming community near Buffalo. Her childhood was characterized by both the challenges and joys of working-class life. She was raised in a modest but close-knit family, finding her greatest solace in books. A turning point came when her grandmother gifted her a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, igniting a lifelong love of literature. She began writing as early as age 14, honing her craft on the typewriter her grandmother gave her—a gift that planted the seeds of her literary future.

Oates attended Williamsville South High School, where she graduated as the first in her family to complete high school. Her talent for storytelling blossomed early and was recognized during her teen years when she won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award. These formative experiences in the Buffalo area provided a foundation of resilience and curiosity that would permeate her later work.

A Prolific Literary Career

Joyce Carol Oates’ career is nothing short of monumental. After earning degrees from Syracuse University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she went on to publish her first book, By the North Gate, in 1963. What followed was an astonishing body of work consisting of over 58 novels, countless short stories, essays, plays, and poetry. She has dabbled in nearly every literary genre, from Gothic fiction and psychological thrillers to historical and social commentaries.

Her best-known works, including Them (1969), Black Water (1992), and Blonde (2000), showcase her mastery of complex characters and dark themes. Violence, poverty, and identity are recurring motifs in her stories, reflecting America’s socio-political landscape. Her novel Them earned her the National Book Award for Fiction, while Blonde, a fictional retelling of Marilyn Monroe’s life, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

Oates has also gained acclaim for short stories like Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, which has been widely anthologized and adapted for film, cementing its place in the canon of great American literature.

Despite her unparalleled productivity—often publishing multiple works in a single year—there is no compromise in the quality of her storytelling. Her ability to humanize her characters, no matter how flawed, has made her one of the most significant voices in contemporary literature.

Contributions to Literature and Beyond

Oates’ influence extends far beyond the printed page. For over three decades, she taught creative writing at Princeton University, mentoring generations of writers, including Jonathan Safran Foer. Her teaching emphasized discipline and energy in crafting fiction, shaping the next wave of American storytellers.

Her essays and critical works reflect her belief in the importance of the humanities. Oates has also been a vocal advocate for issues like gender equality and gun control, often using her writing to amplify marginalized voices. Her clarity of thought and ability to confront uncomfortable truths have made her an enduring figure in American intellectual life.

Though Joyce Carol Oates moved away from Buffalo early in her career, her connection to the region remains deep. Her upbringing in Western New York informed much of her worldview, inspiring her explorations of human struggle and resilience. Buffalo, with its blue-collar sensibilities and cultural vibrancy, clearly played a formative role in her identity as a writer.

Oates’ incredible literary output shines a spotlight on Buffalo’s rich cultural heritage, proving that the area has given rise to some of the country’s greatest creative minds. Her work serves as a source of pride for the community, establishing Buffalo as a city with intellectual and artistic depth.

Oates’ legacy is not only defined by her impressive bibliography but by the inspiration she offers to new writers.
About Katharine Cornell

Katharine Cornell – Buffalo’s First Lady of the Theatre

Buffalo, NY, has a proud history of nurturing extraordinary talent, and one of its brightest stars is Katharine Cornell. Born on February 16, 1893, to American parents in Berlin, Cornell was raised in Buffalo, where her passion for theater began to bloom. Her illustrious career and contributions to the stage earned her the nickname “The First Lady of the Theatre,” a title that cements her as one of the greatest figures in American theater history.

Growing Up in Buffalo

Katharine Cornell’s roots in Buffalo shaped the foundation of her career. The Cornell family, prominent in Buffalo’s business and social circles, fostered a creative environment that encouraged her to explore her artistic abilities. Growing up in a household on Mariner Street, Katharine participated in school plays, backyard dramatizations, and even family productions in her grandfather’s attic theater on Delaware Avenue.

Though her home life was tumultuous—her relationship with her parents was strained, particularly due to her mother’s struggles with alcoholism—Cornell found solace in the world of make-believe. It was this love of performance that ultimately propelled her towards a life on stage. She began acting in local productions, including performances at the Buffalo Studio Club’s parlor theater on Franklin Street.

She attended private schools in Buffalo before moving on to Oaksmere School in Mamaroneck, NY, where she further developed her interest in theater, participating in numerous productions and refining her craft.

A Broadway Legend

Cornell’s first big break came with the Washington Square Players, a theater company in New York City, where she was quickly noticed for her raw talent and stage presence. She went on to captivate audiences with her heartfelt performances in major Broadway productions throughout her career, which spanned from 1915 to 1960.

She is perhaps best known for her role as Elizabeth Barrett Browning in Rudolf Besier’s play The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1931). The production, a sweeping romantic drama, won not only critical acclaim but also the hearts of audiences across America. Cornell’s portrayal was described as “intensely emotional” and “magnetic,” establishing her as one of Broadway’s leading talents.

Other career highlights include her performance in Romeo and Juliet, where she played Juliet in what critics called the most enchanting interpretation of the role at that time. She was also lauded for her performances in The Letter (1927), Antony and Cleopatra (1947), and Candida, a role she returned to repeatedly throughout her career.

Her Broadway roles often emphasized serious drama and romance, and her refined presence brought a depth to her characters that resonated with audiences. She avoided Hollywood, appearing in just one film, stating that live theater allowed her to connect more deeply with her audience.

Her Title “The First Lady of the Theatre”

Katharine Cornell’s influence went far beyond her roles. Her tireless dedication to bringing high-quality productions to the stage earned her the affectionate title “The First Lady of the Theatre.” Her impeccable taste, attention to detail, and reverent approach inspired respect throughout the theater community.

Cornell worked alongside her husband, Guthrie McClintic, who directed many of her productions. Together, they founded C. & M.C. Productions, Inc., which gave them complete artistic freedom. Their company was instrumental in bringing Shakespearean plays and other high-caliber dramas to Broadway, introducing American audiences to some of the most celebrated British actors of the day.

Contributions to the Arts

Cornell was not only a performer but also a pioneer. During World War II, she took her production of The Barretts of Wimpole Street overseas, performing for troops in Europe amidst the chaos of war. Her ability to connect with audiences, even under challenging circumstances, solidified her reputation as an artist of unparalleled commitment and grace.

She remained deeply connected to Buffalo throughout her life, often bringing her productions back to the city. Her presence at theaters, particularly the Erlanger Theater on Delaware Avenue, symbolized her enduring love for her hometown. Cornell cherished Buffalo, and Buffalonians adored her in return, often greeting her with open arms and heartfelt applause.

An Enduring Legacy

Katharine Cornell’s theatrical career profoundly shaped American theater. Her fearless interpretations, sophistication, and groundbreaking work set a standard for stage actors, especially those pursuing classical and dramatic roles. To this day, she is celebrated as one of history’s great stage actresses.

Back in Buffalo, her legacy is preserved in several ways. The Katharine Cornell Theater was named in her honor at the Tisbury Town Hall on Martha’s Vineyard, where she lived later in life. Similarly, the Katharine Cornell Theatre at the State University of New York at Buffalo stands as a reminder of her roots and unwavering dedication to the arts.

A Lasting Inspiration

Katharine Cornell was a woman of extraordinary talent, vision, and heart. Her commitment to elevating the stage as a medium for storytelling, her love for her city of Buffalo, and her contributions to theater continue to inspire actors and audiences alike.

Every curtain drawn on a stage in Buffalo pays homage to her enduring influence. For generations of theater lovers, Katharine Cornell remains not just a local hero, but a national treasure—a beacon of what it means to create, inspire, and leave an unforgettable mark on the world.

Bellavia made a name for himself as an award-winning children’s author and illustrator, best known for his impactful “We Are All the Same Inside” series. Published in 2000, the landmark picture book champions diversity and inclusion, offering young readers an engaging way to recognize the common humanity that unites them all.

“We Are All the Same Inside” centers on the concept that beneath external appearances, everyone shares the same intrinsic value and potential.
About Tim Russert

Tim Russert: Buffalo’s Voice in American Journalism

Born on May 7, 1950, in Buffalo, New York, Tim Russert embodied the values of hard work, determination, and authenticity—traits he credited to his upbringing in the close-knit neighborhood of South Buffalo. Known best as the iconic moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, Russert’s legacy extends far beyond the television screen. His roots in Buffalo shaped not only the man he became but also the unparalleled journalist he was.

South Buffalo Beginnings

Tim Russert grew up in a vibrant Irish Catholic neighborhood, where everyone seemed to know each other’s names—and each other’s families. He described South Buffalo in his memoir Big Russ and Me as “a warm and tightly knit neighborhood,” a place where character was shaped not by wealth but by the lessons passed down from parents, teachers, and community leaders.

His father, affectionately known as Big Russ, worked as a sanitation worker and World War II veteran, teaching Tim the value of hard work and sacrifice. Faith was also central to his upbringing. Tim made his First Communion and served as an altar boy at Holy Family Church. These early experiences gave him the moral compass and empathy that would guide his career in journalism.

Tim’s early sense of responsibility was evident when he worked at the switchboard of St. Michael’s Church rectory to help pay for his tuition at Canisius High School. There, the Jesuit education instilled in him a lifelong commitment to excellence, curiosity, and service to others.

Building a Career in Washington

After pursuing a Bachelor’s at John Carroll University and earning his law degree from Cleveland State University, Russert stepped into the world of politics, working as chief of staff to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and later as a top aide to New York Governor Mario Cuomo. These experiences gave him invaluable insight into the political world, preparing him for a journalistic career where he would ask America’s leaders the tough questions.

Russert joined NBC in 1984 as a Washington bureau chief, and by 1991, he was named the moderator of Meet the Press, the nation’s longest-running television program. Under his leadership, the show transformed into an essential platform for political discourse. His interviewing style, which combined deep research with pointed but respectful questions, earned him accolades—and occasionally rattled even the most seasoned politicians.

Perhaps most famously, during the 2000 presidential election, Russert distilled the complex Electoral College drama into three simple words written on a whiteboard: “Florida, Florida, Florida.” This analysis became iconic, demonstrating his ability to make even the most intricate political moments accessible to his audience.

A Trailblazer in Journalism

Tim Russert didn’t just report the news—he shaped how Americans understood it. He was renowned for holding officials accountable by challenging inconsistencies in their past statements, a technique he mastered on Meet the Press. Under his stewardship, the program reached more than four million weekly viewers and was widely regarded as one of the most influential sources of political news in the country.

He invented terms like “red states” and “blue states” to describe Republican-leaning and Democratic-leaning states—terminology now embedded in America’s political lexicon. But beyond his professional achievements, it was Russert’s integrity, warmth, and humanity that made him beloved by colleagues and audiences alike.

A Devoted Son of Buffalo

Buffalo was never far from Tim Russert’s mind, even as he gained national recognition. His deep love for his hometown was evident in everything he did. Sundays during football season often ended with his joyful “Go Bills!” sign-off. He remained devoted to his Buffalo Bills, even when their Super Bowl dreams were elusive.

The city has honored him in numerous ways. Woodside Avenue, where he lived until age 11, was renamed Tim Russert Way. Parks, libraries, and public spaces throughout Buffalo bear his name. His contributions to the community extended to revitalization projects and youth initiatives, such as funding the Tim Russert Children’s Garden near a library where he once borrowed sports biographies as a child.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Remembering Timothy J.

Remembering a Legacy

Tim Russert’s untimely death on June 13, 2008, at the age of 58, was a tremendous loss for both the world of journalism and his hometown of Buffalo. But his legacy continues through the lives he touched and the institution he built at Meet the Press. His candor, humility, and relentless pursuit of the truth remain the gold standard in political journalism.

Buffalo will forever be proud to call Tim Russert one of its own. A true son of the Queen City, he exemplified its best qualities—tenacity, generosity, and heart. For journalists, politicians, and citizens alike, Russert’s legacy reminds us of the enduring importance of asking the hard questions, seeking accountability, and celebrating where we come from.

Early Life and Buffalo Roots

Carrie Stevens spent her early childhood in Buffalo, the city that played a pivotal role in shaping her identity. Raised by a research scientist father and an artist mother, she grew up in a creative and intellectually stimulating environment. Carrie’s family later relocated to Hardwick, Massachusetts, but the resilience and work ethic of her Buffalo upbringing stayed with her.

About Bruce Kershner

Bruce Kershner: Buffalo’s Guardian of Old-Growth Forests

Born on April 17, 1950, in Buffalo, NY, Bruce Kershner was a man who turned his passion for nature into a lifelong mission to protect the planet’s most cherished landscapes. An environmentalist, author, and teacher, Bruce left an undeniable legacy on the preservation of old-growth forests in Western New York and beyond. His work continues to inspire conservationists and nature enthusiasts who share his deep love for the natural world.

Early Life and Inspiration

Bruce grew up immersed in the natural beauty of Buffalo’s surroundings, where towering trees, flowing rivers, and unique ecosystems sparked his curiosity. Though he later spent time in downstate New York, Buffalo’s proximity to rich wilderness areas remained an intrinsic influence on his career.

His academic pursuits reflected his love for the environment. Bruce earned a degree in biology and ecology from Binghamton University and a master’s in botany and ecology from the University of Connecticut. These studies equipped him with the knowledge he needed to become a leading environmental advocate.

Settling back in Western New York, he channeled his enthusiasm for teaching and exploration into a career as a high school biology teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Sloan. There, he founded the Environmental Club to inspire young minds and introduce students to the importance of conservation.

A Champion of Old-Growth Forests

Bruce Kershner was renowned as an expert on old-growth forests, uncovering nearly 300 sites of ancient woodlands in North America. Many of these forests were previously thought to be destroyed. His discoveries included New York State’s oldest forest and the largest conglomeration of old-growth trees along the Niagara River corridor.

One of his greatest achievements was his work in the Zoar Valley, a magical area in Southern Erie County, where he documented and protected some of the tallest trees in the eastern United States. These ancient giants, hidden from loggers for centuries, became central to Bruce’s mission. His advocacy resulted in the preservation of these forests, which now stand as a testament to his dedication.

Bruce’s efforts went beyond the Zoar Valley. He played key roles in protecting forested areas in Allegany State Park, the Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, and the Niagara Gorge, among others. He also collaborated on legislation for environmental conservation, notably contributing to the passing of the Bruce S. Kershner Old-Growth Forest Preservation and Protection Act in New York State in 2008. The law established the definition and legal protections for old-growth forests—a true milestone in environmental policy.

A Gifted Author

Bruce Kershner’s love for nature was not confined to the forests he tirelessly defended. He poured his passion into writing, publishing a dozen books that captivated readers with their vivid depictions of the natural world. His titles, such as The Sierra Club Guide to Ancient Forests of the Northeast and Secret Places of Western New York and Southern Ontario, became valuable resources for adventurers and conservationists alike.

While his books focused on uncovering hidden natural treasures, they also served as compelling calls to action, urging readers to preserve these places for future generations. His ability to communicate complex ecological topics in an accessible, heartfelt manner earned him widespread acclaim.

Awards and Legacy

Bruce Kershner’s tireless work was recognized with numerous awards, including Environmentalist of the Year (awarded by both the Sierra Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club) and the New York State Environmentalist of the Year honor. These accolades stood as a testament to his unwavering resolve to protect the environment.

Beyond his accolades, Bruce’s most enduring legacy lies in the natural landscapes he fought to preserve. His efforts secured state protections that will keep these magnificent forests standing for generations to come, and his work with the Buffalo Audubon Society and other conservation groups established lasting programs to promote ecological awareness.

A Buffalo Son, Forever Connected to Nature

Although Bruce passed away in 2007 after battling cancer, his spirit lives on in the forests he loved and the people he inspired. His connection to Buffalo and its surrounding wilderness shaped both his life and career, fostering a deep appreciation for the beauty and fragility of the environment.

Whether walking the trails at Zoar Valley, reading one of his insightful books, or standing in awe of an ancient tree, you can feel Bruce Kershner’s presence. He was more than an environmentalist—he was Buffalo’s champion of nature, a guardian of old-growth forests, and a storyteller who reminded us why the natural world is worth fighting for.

Here’s to Bruce Kershner—a Buffalo son whose legacy continues to inspire a greener, more sustainable future.

About Paul Noworyta

Paul Noworyta: Buffalo’s Vert Skating Pioneer and Advocate

Buffalo, NY, is no stranger to producing trailblazers, and Paul Noworyta is one of its most inspirational figures. Born on April 7, 1969, Noworyta didn’t just make waves in the world of vert skating—he shattered barriers and made history. With roots firmly planted in Buffalo’s hardworking and community-driven culture, Paul’s story is one of perseverance, determination, and giving back.

Early Life in the City of Good Neighbors

Growing up in Buffalo, Paul absorbed the grit and resilience the city is famous for. The vibrant culture, especially in its sports and recreational scenes, offered endless opportunities for a kid with an adventurous spirit. From rolling around local skate parks to envisioning the kinds of heights only ramps could provide, Paul’s youthful curiosity quickly turned into a burning passion for vert skating.

Buffalo’s supportive atmosphere gave him the courage to chase his dreams, even when the odds were stacked against him. Though professional rollerblading might seem far removed from Buffalo’s snowy streets, Paul’s roots taught him how to persevere no matter the terrain.

Breaking Barriers in Vert Skating

Paul Noworyta’s skateboarding story is one for the books—literally. He became a professional vert skater, defying odds after undergoing a life-saving kidney transplant. At just 20 years old, Paul received a transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in September 1989. That experience could have sidelined anyone, but it only fueled his determination.

Vert skating is a physically demanding discipline, combining aerial stunts with precise control on a half-pipe structure. It’s not for the faint of heart, and Paul embraced the challenge with his typical go-getter spirit. He became the only athlete in the world to compete professionally on the vert skating circuit after receiving a kidney transplant—a title he holds to this day.

What’s even more remarkable is that Paul didn’t start his professional skating career until the age of 33—becoming the sport’s oldest rookie. His tenacity paved the way for participation in major competitions, where he held his own against much younger skaters. Some of his favorite tricks include the daring McTwist 540, backflips, and big disaster inverts—earlier feats that cemented his professional reputation.

Career Highlights

Paul’s career took him to vert competitions across the country in the early 2000s. He competed in events such as the LG Action Sports World Championships, NBC Gravity Games, and the Mobile Skatepark Series, earning recognition for his skills and perseverance. One standout moment was his fourth-place finish at the 2002 ASA World Championships in Los Angeles—an incredible achievement for someone proving every day that no obstacle was too great to overcome.

Advocacy Beyond the Ramps

Paul Noworyta didn’t just stop at pushing personal limits—he became a vocal advocate for kidney transplant awareness. Using his platform, Paul has inspired others to see that life can go on, and even thrive, after a transplant. His 2006 book, Transplant to Handplant, shares his incredible story of triumph over adversity, offering a blend of personal reflection and motivation.

He continues to spread awareness through his website KidneysAreSexy.com, a lighthearted but heartfelt initiative aimed at promoting organ donation and supporting kidney transplant recipients. His advocacy has turned his personal story into a source of hope for thousands of people navigating similar challenges.

A True Buffalo Ambassador

Despite traveling far and wide for competitions and events, Buffalo remains at the core of Paul’s story. The city’s values of perseverance, loyalty, and community shine through his achievements and advocacy. Paul is living proof of Buffalo’s ability to nurture extraordinary talent and strength.

Whether he’s flipping under the bright lights of competition or reconnecting with local roots, Paul proudly represents his hometown. Buffalo isn’t just where Paul started—it’s a constant source of inspiration that he carries with him wherever life takes him.

Celebrating Paul Noworyta

From the vert ramp to the advocacy stage, Paul Noworyta is more than just an athlete—he’s a symbol of resilience and inspiration. Buffalo can be proud to count him among its own, as his story inspires others to push boundaries, overcome obstacles, and face challenges with an indomitable spirit.

Paul Noworyta reminds us that success isn’t just about skill; it’s about heart, determination, and a willingness to give back. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a kidney transplant recipient, or simply someone chasing a dream, his story proves that nothing can hold you back when you keep striving.

Here’s to Paul Noworyta—a Buffalo-born hero who continues to inspire and pave the way for dreamers everywhere.
