#OnThisDay In 1922, W.E.B. Dubois speaks at Buffalo’s NAACP chapter. DuBois’s influence on the Western New York area is massive. DuBois was the leader who organized a meeting of Black intellectuals to gather in Fort Erie, Ontario to form the Niagara Movement, a civil rights group focused on the empowerment and freedom of all African Americans.

DuBois can still be felt today in Buffalo, with his face immortalized on the side of Buffalo’s Freedom Wall, located on East Ferry and Michigan Ave.
