#OnThisDay In 1956, The Schoellkopf Power Plant collpases into the Niagara Gorge. The wall that was against the bluff of the Gorge began to take water, causing the stations to flood and fall from the cliff’s bluff into the Niagara River below. The collpase led to two-thirds of the plant to be destroyed, with the rest of it eroding with time or removed not long after the disaster.
The energy production void left by the absence of the Schoellkopf Plant was eventually replaced by Robert Moses’s Niagara Power Plant. You can still see the ruins of the Schoellkopf Power Plant today, as they are a part of Niagara Falls State Park and can be reached thorough the Niagara Gorge Trails.
Do you have any memories of the collapse or have you visited the ruins?
