#OnThisDay In 1848, The first suspension bridge crossing over the Niagara River is completed. The bridge was built on the narrowed part of the Niagara Gorge. The bridge was started by Charles Ellet but had to be finished by Jonh Roebling, who later went on to architect the Brooklyn Bridge’s build. The bridge continued to stand until 1897 and was replaced by a steel arch bridge.
