#OnThisDay In 1919, Lackawanna Steel workers walk off the job as a part of the American Federation of Labor’s Great Steel Strike. Over half of Lackawanna Steel’s workforce joined along with 350,000 striking steel workers across the country. Led by the AFL, they demanded better working conditions, shorter hours and higher wages.
The police, who were in cahoots with the business owners of the city were brought in to quell the anger of the strikers and put them down with violence. It resulted in multiple striking workers to be injured and in a few cases, murdered by the police and national guard.
