Established in 2009, the Czurles-Nelson Gallery pays tribute to Stanley A. Czurles, the late SUNY Distinguished Service Professor of art education, who pioneered Buffalo State’s art education program back in 1931.

Through a combination of present and future donations, Barbara L. Czurles Nelson, daughter of Czurles, and her late spouse, Donald J. Nelson, created six annual scholarships: five benefiting students in the five visual arts programs, and the sixth awarded to a student in the Music Department. They also provided ongoing support for the gallery itself. The Czurles-Nelson gallery serves as an academic venue dedicated to upholding the scholarly and cultural mission of SUNY Buffalo State’s visual arts programs. It offers a platform for the creative and critical expression of both students and faculty, while fostering a stimulating learning environment that encourages exploration, experimentation, and analytical thinking. Additionally, it provides comprehensive, hands-on exhibition experience.
