#OnThisDay In 1935, Darwin D. Martin passes away. Martin, whom made his fortune with the Larkin Soap Company, is largely known for his indelible mark on the City of Buffalo through his commissions from and friendship with Frank Lloyd Wright. Martin actually lent Wright money and was the largest benefactor to help build Wright’s Taliesin. As mentioned, Martin is most known for commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright to build his home in Buffalo’s Parkside neighborhood, known as The Darwin D. Martin House. This was not Martin’s only commission from Wright, also commissioning a summer home known as the Graycliff Estate. Towards the end of his life, Martin commissioned The Blue Sky Mausoleum but could not pay for it since he lost his fortune in the Great Depression. The Blue Sky Mausoleum was completed with help from Forest Lawn in 2004. Frank Lloyd Wright never paid back Martin’s loans. #franklloydwrightarchitecture #franklloydwright #Buffalo #BornBuffalo #Buffalo #BuffaloHistoryChannel #716 #buffalo716 #History #WNY #OldBuffalo #DarwinMartinHouse #Graycliff #BlueSkyMausoleum #OnThisDayInArchitecture
