#OnThisDay In 1889, Iroquois Hotel opens. The hotel was built of Granite and adorned with fireproof tiles on their room. At the time of it’s heyday, it was viewed as Buffalo’s most elegant hotel. The hotel used to stand in between Main, Eagle and Washington Streets respectively. The building was bought by direct competitor E.M. Statler to guarantee success for his soon-to-be Hotel Statler.
The day the Statler Hotel opened, Statler closed Iroquois Hotel. The building was later demolished in 1940 for a department store. Sometime in the 60s, the entire block was razed for the building of 1 M&T Plaza, designed by Minoru Yamasaki.
