#OnThisDay In 1902, Marshall “Major” Taylor competes in a bicycle race at Buffalo Athletic Field, being narrowly defeated by fellow legend and rival, Frank Kramer. Major Taylor, as hinted to, is a cycling legend. Notably, Taylor is the first African-American to win a world championship in any sport, as he did in cycling.

At the turn of the century, cycling races were extremely popular with many taking place in Buffalo! The former Buffalo Athletic Field used to stand at the corner of Main St. and Jefferson Ave, ultimately becoming a Sears and now a part of Canisius College.
