#OnThisDay In 1935, The Grand Island Bridge opened. Connecting the Island to Tonawanda with a two-way traffic truss arch bridge, it eliminated the need for taking a ferry. The northbound span to connect Niagara Falls and Grand Island was erected in 1962, coinciding with the growth of the island.
