#OnThisDay In 1848, Sisters Hospital is incorporated, becoming the City of Buffalo’s first hospital. Formed by the Sisters of Charity, a christian group founded by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, a group of nuns who dedicated their life to healthcare. It was created after Bishop John Timon of Buffalo travelled to Baltimore to request their charity and services.

The hospital was placed in a former school located on St. Louis Place, at the corner of North Pearl Street and Virginia Street. The building actually still stands today and has been converted into apartments. If you ever find yourself by this building, there is a placque declaring it’s historical significance.

Have you ever seen this building? Did you know Sisters Hospital was the first?
