OnThisDay In 1956, The New York Telephone Company, now known as Verizon, launches their long-distance area codes in order to help customers make calls over further distances. This was the beginning of Buffalo’s love affair with the numbers 716. It was until 1960 that customers themselves could enter 716 themselves, having to use an operator until then.
