#OnThisDay In 1982, Bethlehem Steel closes. Despite surviving declines in the U.S. steel industry in 1970s, Bethlehem halted most of their steelmaking operations following a loss of $1.5 billion. The company had to cut over 7,000 jobs in WNY. The lasting effect of Bethlehem’s absence and reverberations can still be felt to this day.
