#OnThisDay In 1844, The Great Flood of 1884 begins at night carrying on into the morning. A 15-foot wall of water, caused by a seiche, hits Buffalo’s waterfront. The flood instantly flooded the waterfront, washing away homes and wharves, while simultaneously washing ships ashore. The flood claimed at least 78 lives in the span of an hour.
