#OnThisDay In 1957, Milton Rogovin, a Buffalo Optometrist, is called in front of the House Committee of Un-American Activities and refuses to speak.

Following this, Rogovin was labeled “Buffalo’s Number One Red” by local newspapers. He was called to speak in front of HUAC due to his protest of the Rosenberg’s execution & trips to Mexico, where he met socialist party members. This event was the catalyst for Rogovin to completely dive into his hobby of photography due to the negative effect the witchhunt had on his optometry business.

Rogovin’s photos became famous for how he was able to capture the reality of social conditions in the U.S., specifcally photographing Buffalo’s East Side and Native Americans, amongst many others.
