#OnThisDay In 1872, the cornerstone is laid for the Buffalo State Asylum in the Richardson Olmsted Complex. Located on Forest Avenue, the Richardson Olmsted Complex/Buffalo State Asylum is one of Buffalo’s most recognizable architectural marvels.
The building has served as an inspiration for many forms of media, notably inspiring the scary asylum setting for the video game “Outlast”. The State Asylum has lived many lives, from the early days of being a psychiatric hospital to being unoccupied and haunted to being repurposed into a hotel and restauramnt, which it has served as for the past decade or so.
