About East Aurora Classic Rink
On January 1, 2008, history was made in Buffalo, NY, when Ralph Wilson Stadium hosted the first-ever outdoor NHL game in the United States. The Winter Classic featured the Buffalo Sabres facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in front of a record-setting crowd of 71,217.
The Aurora Ice Association acquired the ice-making equipment from the NHL, and with the support of hundreds of passionate volunteers, private donations, and corporate backing, a tribute to this historic event was established in the Village of East Aurora.
The Aurora Ice Association, Inc. (AIA) is a New York State not-for-profit organization with the aim of bringing ice sports and recreational activities to the residents and families of East Aurora and the surrounding south towns communities.
Those looking to participate in a sport that requires skill, strength, strategic thinking, and teamwork will find hockey and lacrosse to be enriching activities that enhance fitness, strength, and coordination. Whether interested in casual play within recreational leagues or competitive play with traveling teams, individuals will discover that the organization provides an excellent environment for learning new skills and making new friends.
The Classic Rink has become a significant asset for the Western New York community. Since its opening in 2008, the venue has added a pavilion-style roof, locker rooms, and a warming lodge. The ice rink operates at full capacity from October to March and offers summer programming for off-ice recreational activities, such as lacrosse, flag football, and community events, from April to September. The Aurora Ice Association continues to actively fundraise for necessary operational equipment, maintenance of existing assets, and youth programming.
