#OnThisDay In 2003, Buffalo Grain Scooper of the S.S. Kinsman Independent work their final shift unloading the Lake & Rail grain elevator. The 160-year old profession was comprised of roughly three-dozen laborers, many of whom were from generations of grain scoopers. Their jobs had been replaced by automated machinery, with many of the men actually relieved, stating it was a “lost trade”. This event marked the end of an extremely important but now-bygone era of Buffalo. Is any of your family former Grain Scooper? Did you know the profession lasted into the 21st century?
