About Michael I. Niman 

Michael I. Niman is a Professor of Journalism and Media Studies at SUNY Buffalo State, where he has been honored with the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. As a syndicated columnist, his impactful work has garnered two Project Censored awards. Niman, a trained ethnographer, authored “People of the Rainbow: A Nomadic Utopia” (2nd edition 2011, University of Tennessee Press), an in-depth ethnography of a nomadic utopian society based on qualitative research conducted across various locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Currently, Niman’s research focuses on propaganda, consumer culture, temporary autonomous zones, nonviolent conflict resolution, and nonhierarchical societies and movements. His diverse career includes work as a journalist in Costa Rica and fieldwork in Canada, Guatemala, Nicaragua, the United Kingdom, Cuba, and Belize. He has also been an invited speaker at prestigious institutions such as the Chautauqua Institute, Cornell University, and Harvard Law School.
