The Swan Street Diner Car History
The Swan Street Diner is a classic example of the early Sterling Company diner cars, crafted by the J.B. Judkins Company in Merrimac, Massachusetts. These unique diner cars were produced between 1936 and 1942, with each unit given a distinctive number upon completion. The Swan Street Diner, bearing the number 397, was built in 1937.
This diner features elegant mahogany trim, a barrel-vaulted ceiling, and walls and ceilings covered with porcelain enamel. The Sterling Company prided itself on producing all necessary components in-house, ensuring top-notch quality and craftsmanship. Every Sterling diner was custom-designed, constructed on-site, and assembled section by section. Elements such as width, length, kitchen location, door placement, window placement, and back wall sections could all be tailored to fit specific needs, allowing for rapid, on-site assembly of a truly bespoke diner car. This modular design enabled business owners, many of whom were returning soldiers, to start small and expand their diner as their business grew. It provided an affordable route into entrepreneurship.
Initially known as the Newark Diner, the Swan Street Diner was located in Newark, N.Y., near Rochester. It arrived in pieces in 1937 and was assembled on location. Its proximity to the Erie Canal and Route 31 guaranteed a steady stream of customers. Over the years, it has had three owners: original proprietor Paul Scolfield, John Reynolds, and Jim McBride, who operated it for 27 years until 2013 when the Larkin Development Group acquired it. The diner was then moved to Akron, Ohio, before returning to Buffalo for a comprehensive restoration. Original features like the enamel panels, bar stools, and wood trim have been preserved, while the booths have been newly fabricated to match the original Newark Diner layout. The counter has also been rebuilt following the original glass-top design.
