A Unique Location with Historical Significance
Situated at the terminus of the historic Erie Canal, Explore & More is at the heart of Buffalo’s waterfront at Canalside. This one-of-a-kind location allows children to connect with the region’s rich history as an innovative port city while engaging in interactive exhibits that spark their imagination.
The museum’s journey at Canalside began in 2007 when it became the first organization to offer children’s programming in the area. Through a strong partnership with the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC), Explore & More was selected as the anchor attraction in Buffalo’s revitalized waterfront, contributing to both economic development and community engagement.

From Humble Beginnings to a World-Class Museum
Explore & More started in 1994 in a modest 500-square-foot basement schoolroom with an all-volunteer staff, welcoming 1,000 visitors in its first year. Over the years, the museum expanded to a 6,000-square-foot facility in East Aurora, serving over 60,000 children and their families. Today, with a 43,000-square-foot, four-story facility at Canalside, the museum continues to grow, reaching children from birth to age 12.
Expanding Accessibility and Community Engagement
By moving to Buffalo’s city center, Explore & More has increased accessibility for visitors from across New York State, Erie, PA, and Ontario, Canada. The museum aims to be a welcoming community center where all families can play, wonder, discover, learn, and grow together.
