#OnThisDay In 1959, the Michael K. Tewksbury crashes into Michigan Avenue Bridge. An unexpected thaw caused ice sheets to break apart on Cazenovia Creek, pushing downstream in the Buffalo River. The ice jam slammed into a freighter, the MacGilvray Shiras, which was moored for winter. The jam pushed the freighter into another freigher, the Michael K. Tewksbury. The two ships barreled down the river until smashing through the Michigan Avenue Bridge, coming to a stop with a scrap heap of metal from the bridge lain atop the Tewksbury.
